Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, is celebrated annually on October 31st in India to honor the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an influential leader in India’s struggle for independence and the architect of the nation’s unity. Sardar Patel, famously known as the “Iron Man of India,” played a crucial role in unifying India post-independence. A prominent leader in the Indian National Congress, he worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and was instrumental in organizing non-violent protests like the Salt March. As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel emphasized national integration and internal security, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire unity and resilience.
At HIMT College, this year’s Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations began with a morning pledge underscoring the importance of togetherness and shared values. Students and faculty gathered for an opening ceremony, where they recited a pledge dedicated to preserving the unity, integrity, and security of the nation:
“I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure internal security of my country.”
The pledge inspired participants to reflect on their role in fostering a harmonious and inclusive society, reinforcing the idea that commitment to the nation’s integrity transcends differences in culture, language, or belief.
Principal, Capt. Anand Subramanian addressed the audience, reflecting on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contributions and highlighting his vision of a united India. His message inspired students to carry forward the spirit of unity and patriotism beyond the day’s celebration.
The program concluded with a spirited marathon led by Capt. Ullattil Ravindran, adding energy and enthusiasm to the day’s events. His leadership in the marathon motivated students to actively embrace the spirit of National Unity Day. The event fostered a sense of community and solidarity, creating a memorable experience that deepened participants’ commitment to the ideals of unity and service to the nation.
