OVERVIEW
The Electro Technical Officer (ETO) program is a specialized four-month professional certification designed for candidates with a background in Electrical or Electronics Engineering who aspire to join the Merchant Navy. This electrical certificate course is structured to equip eligible graduates or diploma holders with the competencies required to manage and maintain a vessel’s electrical, electronic, and automation systems. Conducted in an approved maritime training institute or marine academy, like HIMT College, the curriculum covers shipboard power generation and distribution, high-voltage systems, control engineering, marine electronics, safety protocols, and international maritime regulations. It is particularly suitable for individuals who have completed recognized electrical engineering courses and meet the medical standards prescribed for sea service.
As one of the most technically focused maritime courses, the Electro Technical Officer course prepares candidates to serve as ETOs onboard modern vessels equipped with advanced automation and integrated control systems. Applicants typically include Electrical Engineering graduates, Electronics and Communication engineers, or related engineering professionals seeking to transition into merchant navy courses without pursuing a full marine engineering degree. When evaluating marine engineering colleges in India or approved training centres offering this program, candidates should ensure regulatory compliance, practical lab facilities, and placement support. This short-duration engineering pathway provides a direct entry into a high-responsibility onboard role within the global shipping industry.
